Here's how I tested all 5 bot-free AI note takers

Every tool in this guide claims not to join your meeting. Rather than take that at face value, I installed all five and ran them simultaneously in one live Google Meet: same call, same speakers, same audio.

I ran it on 4 litmus tests:

• The participant test: Does anything appear in the attendee list, chat, or admission queue?
• The screen test: How visible is the tool, and how much work does it take to start?
• The output test: Who did it think was speaking, what did it get wrong, and would I send the summary to a client unedited?
• The paper trail: Where does the audio go after capture, according to each vendor's security and privacy documentation?

Here's what came back:

Finding 1: All five passed the participant test

• Result: No bots joined. The participant count stayed at 2 throughout. 
• Important: Many "bot-free" competitors still offer visible bot-based capture. But two of the five also sell a bot, and that matters for what you're actually buying. Bluedot documents a bot that joins as a participant and needs to be admitted, and Krisp lists "Record with bot" from Core upward. Both default to bot-free capture; neither is bot-free by architecture. Only Jamie, Granola, and Tactiq have no bot to enable. 

Finding 2: Bot-free doesn't mean invisible on your screen; expect some toggles, but only for your screen

All five were invisible to the other participant. On my own screen, they ranged from nothing to a third of the window.

• No on-screen presence at all: Krisp, which sits in the audio path rather than the meeting window
• A small indicator: Jamie and Granola. Jamie starts on one click or automatically from the calendar with a cancellable countdown; Granola detects the meeting itself
• A small toolbar pill: Bluedot, which needs a click or keyboard shortcut to start
• A docked panel: Tactiq, taking about a third of the Meet window, including a live transcript, an Ask Tactiq AI tab, a language selector and an Upgrade button

Finding 3: What happens to the audio differs more than the capture does

• Tactiq's extension creates no audio, because it reads captions. Its Mac app and file uploads do involve audio.
• Jamie and Granola both record, transcribe, then delete. Granola states that audio is cached for transcription only, then deleted from its systems and third-party services.
• Bluedot and Krisp retain audio. Bluedot removes deleted data immediately, with backups retained for 30 days; Krisp allocates 10 GB on Core and 60 GB on Advanced.

Finding 4: Where your meeting is processed

• Jamie: All meeting data is stored and processed in Europe, on every plan, including free 
• Granola: AWS in the United States, with no EU or UK residency option
• Bluedot: Supports EU data residency, with AWS listed as processing data in Germany. 
• Krisp: US servers, with no regional storage option currently offered, though Enterprise includes a data center choice, and one sub-processor sits in Finland
• Tactiq: Google Cloud, with no published regional guarantee. Its storage-location setting controls the destination a transcript saves to, not the region

Final verdict: What is the best bot-free AI note taker in 2026?

All five capture meetings without a participant joining the call, and all five passed that test in my Google Meet runs. But bot-free capture is now widely available. Fellow, Fireflies, Otter, tl;dv, Fathom, Circleback, Laxis, MeetGeek, and HappyScribe all offer a bot-free or device-based option alongside their bots. So the real question is what each tool does after it captures the meeting. 

• Jamie is the pick when the same people show up in your meetings week after week, and you need your notes to know who they are. It is the only tool here that learns a voice once and recognizes it in future meetings and the only one that can identify speakers in a room without a participant list to reference. It also offers EU storage and processing, audio deletion, ISO 27001 certification, no model training, and a consent email on the free plan. The main limitation is the 30-minute meeting cap on the free time, while SOC 2 Type II certification is still in progress.
• Granola is the better choice if you already take notes during calls. It combines what you wrote with what it heard, so the output reads more like your own notes than an AI-generated summary. Like Jamie, it deletes audio after transcription. The trade-offs are US hosting with no EU option, de-identified training enabled by default outside Enterprise, and only 30 days of notes viewable on the free plan.
• Tactiq is the one to choose if your meetings happen in a browser and you want a transcript without recording the call. Its extension creates no audio at all. Keep in mind that the Mac app and file uploads do involve audio, so the no-recording claim applies specifically to the extension. Its five free AI credits also cover five meetings, not five summaries.
• Bluedot makes sense when the bigger problem is not your notes but the CRM nobody updates. Its CRM and ATS integrations are available on the $32 Business plan. It publishes SOC 2 Type II and lists Germany as its place of processing, but it does not hold ISO 27001 certification. Its free plan is limited to five meetings for the lifetime of the account.
• Krisp is worth considering if poor transcripts are caused by background noise. Its on-device noise cancellation cleans the audio before transcription, addressing a problem that better summarization alone cannot fix. Krisp also offers a meeting bot from Core upward, hosts data in the US, references ISO 27001 certifications held by Azure and AWS rather than holding one itself, supports 16 languages, and does not offer a permanent free plan.

When choosing between them, weigh four things:

• Bot-free capture: Does the tool have a meeting bot at all, or only a bot-free recording mode? Three of these five have no bot.
• Privacy: Where is your audio processed? Is it deleted after transcription? Is your data used to train models by default?
