Background noise can sneak into your Google Meet calls fast. It could be your pet throwing tantrums, loud typing sounds from keyboard, construction noise from outside, or anything else. The good news is, Google Meet has a built-in noise cancellation feature that filters out those distractions so your voice stays clear.

In this quick guide, I’ll show you how you can use noise cancellation for your Google Meet calls across devices. And as a bonus, I’ll also introduce you to an AI note taker to capture your meetings with precision. Let’s get started!

Who Can Use the Noise Cancellation Option in Google Meet?

Cloud-based noise cancellation works on desktop, Android, and iOS, but only for certain plans—like Business Standard, Enterprise, Education Plus, Workspace Individual, and Google One subscribers with 2TB+ storage.

Be sure to check your plan type (or check with your workplace) in case you cannot see the option.

Steps to Turn on Noise Cancellation in Google Meet

Here's how you can turn on noise cancellation in different devices:

On computer

You can enable noise cancellation before or during a meeting.

Before a meeting:

  1. Open Google Meet and select a meeting.
  2. Before joining, click More options (⋮) > Settings.
  3. Go to the Audio tab.
  4. Toggle on Noise cancellation.
  5. Click Join now.

During a meeting:

  1. At the bottom, click More options (⋮) > Settings.
  2. Open the Audio tab.
  3. Turn on Noise cancellation.

On Android or iOS (iPhone/iPad)

Noise cancellation can only be toggled during a meeting on mobile devices.

During a Meeting:

  1. Tap anywhere on the screen, then tap More (⋮).
  2. Tap the Settings menu.
  3. Select Noise cancellation and turn it on.

Things to Keep in Mind When Using Noise Cancellation

  • Noise cancellation won’t affect audio you share during screen sharing—anything you play (like a video or song) will still come through clearly
  • It filters out background sounds or noises, but not voices. So if a TV is on or multiple people are talking around you, others may still hear that
  • If you’re planning to play music or use non-speech sounds, it’s best to turn the noise cancellation option off so the audio doesn’t get distorted
  • Google Meet automatically adjusts the volume so everyone’s voice sounds balanced, even if someone’s speaking too softly or loudly

Now that your audio is nice and clear, there's one more thing to think about—keeping track of everything that was said.

In most meetings, things move quickly. It’s easy to miss a key point, forget who said what, or lose track of action items.

That’s where Jamie comes in.

See how Jamie works:

Jamie is an AI note taker that works silently in the background, and doesn’t require a bot to join your meeting. As Jamie captures only the audio from your device, you don’t have to worry about the awkward ‘AI bot has joined the meeting’ pop-ups.

a. It captures clean, high-quality audio—even in noisy places

Whether you’re working from a bustling cafe or a busy office, Jamie still manages to hear what matters. Your words come through clear, and Jamie picks up the key points like a pro.

b. Jamie works offline too

Since Jamie works locally on your device, you can use it for in-person meetings as well (even without internet). Jamie records the audio and finishes the transcription and summary once you’re back online. Perfect for offline chats or times when your Wi-Fi is unreliable.

c. After the meeting, Jamie gives you more than just a transcript

You’ll get a structured summary with smart topic highlights, action items, and clear decisions. Each speaker is tagged by name, so you always know who said what.

d. You don’t have to pay extra to unlock the good stuff

Even with the free plan, Jamie gives you speaker identification, full transcripts, smart summaries, action items, decision tracking, and all other premium features (capped at 10 meetings/month). There’s no hidden fees. Try the free plan and upgrade only when you absolutely love the tool.

e. Jamie remembers your regular speakers

After just a few meetings, it learns to recognize familiar voices and tags them automatically in future notes. So over time, your meeting summaries feel more personalized.

f. When you're in a hurry, Jamie’s Sidebar (built-in AI assistant) comes through

Press Ctrl + J during or after your meeting, and ask Jamie's Executive Assistant Sidebar to find details from past conversations, draft quick follow-up emails, or answer your general queries. Powered by GPT-4, Claude 3.5, and Jamie’s own AI model, Sidebar ensures you don’t have to switch between multiple AI tools.

FAQs

Can I use noise cancellation with a free Google account?

Device-based noise cancellation or noise suppression is available on most Android phones' device settings for all users, even for users with free accounts. But for cloud-based noise cancellation, you need an eligible paid Google Workspace account.

Can I use noise cancellation before joining a meeting on mobile?

No. On Android and iOS devices, you can only turn noise cancellation on during a meeting.

Does noise cancellation affect screen-shared audio?

Nope. Audio from screen sharing (like videos or music) is not affected by noise cancellation—other meeting participants can still hear it.

Does Google Meet reduce background noise of all types?

Not completely. Google Meet is designed to filter out non-speech sounds like typing or background hums. Human voices close to your mic might still be picked up.

Does Jamie work with any video platform other than Google Meet?

Yes! Jamie works with Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and any other meeting platform. Since it captures audio directly from your device (not through bot integrations), it's platform-agnostic.

Is Jamie safe to use?

Yes, Jamie is completely safe.

Your privacy comes first. Jamie doesn’t save your audio or video after your meeting is processed. Everything is deleted right away.

Your data is stored in Frankfurt, Germany, under strong GDPR protection. It’s encrypted both when it’s moving and when it’s stored.

Jamie only uses your data to help you. It never shares anything across accounts, and it’s never used to train other AI tools. Even when Jamie uses tools like OpenAI or Anthropic to help write summaries, nothing is saved or shared with them.
